Safety Management System

According to the Railway Safety Regulator Act, the responsibility to manage safety lies with the railway operator.
The Act requires that the operator develops a Safety Management System (SMS), which includes appropriate strategies for managing safety and reducing risk and that the operator can demonstrate compliance with the SMS.
Transnet Freight Rail established a Corporate Railway Safety Office, to manage its responsibilities in terms of the Act.
We implemented a comprehensive safety management system, expanding the elements covered by the system to 23. Our safety management system report demonstrates that Transnet Freight Rail can operate safely, which allowed the Railway Safety Regulator to grant Transnet Freight Rail a license to operate since 1 April 2004.
We expect of all our employees to make a personal commitment to safety and to perform their work in a manner that will prevent accidents to themselves, their fellow workers, passengers and the public.
