​North-East Corridor

            

Overview 

Mineral Mining and ChromeThe North-East corridor stretches from Limpopo River at Beitbridge in the Limpopo province through Komatipoort down to Richards Bay on the East coast. Operations comprises the transportation of high yielding freight on three prominent linear flows (Pit to Port) and are defined as follows:.

  •  ​Phalaborwa to Maputo and Richards Bay, mainly transporting Magnetite and Rock Phosphate for export markets
  • Witbank to Maputo, mainly transporting Chrome and Coal for export markets
  • Witbank to Richards Bay, transporting coal and chrome for export markets.​

The North-East Corridor is a strategic link between South Africa and SADEC region through Zimbabwe and is a strategic partner between South Africa, Mozambique and Swaziland.  Strengths within the corridor are good rail connectivity with sub-Saharan Africa, enabling operational integration; and collaboration across Transnet Operating Divisions improving service on integrated pit-to-port flows
