The Law
Section 32 of the South African Constitution guarantees everyone's right of access to information held by the state and other persons or institutions.
The Promotion of Access to Information Act 2 of 2000 (PAIA) provides the framework and procedures for the exercise of this right to information as swiftly, inexpensively and effortlessly as is reasonably possible. The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) plays an important part in the implementation of PAIA.
What information does the act cover?
PAIA applies to records of a public or private body regardless of when they came into existence. PAIA applies to all recorded information regardless of form or medium, either in the possession or under the control of Transnet and its business units.
What information does Transnet have available?
Some information of Transnet is available without a person needing to request access in terms of PAIA. Access to this information only requires payment of a prescribed fee for reproduction.
According to the act, all public and private organisations have to publish a manual describing the functions of the organisation and the information that the organisation holds.

The manuals and the request form require Adobe Acrobat Reader to view and print. If you do not have it installed on your computer, download from here.
How do I request access to Transnet information?
Requests for access to records of Transnet and any of its business units must be made on the prescribed request form and sent or faxed to the address on the first page of the request form.
Two request forms are made available. The Transnet Freight Rail request form is only for information held by Transnet Freight Rail. The Transnet request form is for information held by any other Transnet business unit.
